Build a trip to Chengdu
Dujiangyan is an ancient water-management system built on the Min River more than two thousand years ago and still central to irrigation and flood control across the Chengdu Plain. Instead of blocking the river with a conventional dam, the system divides and guides the current through features such as Fish Mouth, Flying Sand Weir and Bottle-Neck Channel. Their placement uses the river’s own force to distribute water, remove sediment and reduce flooding, demonstrating extraordinary observation of hydrology and landscape. The project is traditionally associated with the Qin official Li Bing and his son, whose achievement transformed the agricultural capacity of Sichuan and supported the rise of the region as a major center of population and food production. Temples and commemorative sites around the works reflect the cultural reverence attached to water control. Dujiangyan is therefore both functioning infrastructure and a UNESCO-recognized historical landscape in which engineering, environment and regional civilization remain inseparable.
