The Temple of Heaven is a vast imperial ritual complex where Ming and Qing emperors performed ceremonies intended to maintain harmony between heaven, earth and the state. The circular Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, Imperial Vault of Heaven and open Circular Mound Altar are arranged along a long north-south axis. Blue roofs, white marble and carefully calculated geometry express celestial symbolism through form, color and number. The complex is larger than its famous central hall and includes gates, cypress groves, preparation spaces and the route followed by imperial processions. Acoustic features such as the Echo Wall add another sensory dimension to the architecture. The contrast between circular heavenly structures and square enclosures embodies traditional cosmology, making the Temple of Heaven one of the clearest surviving examples of ritual thought translated into monumental spatial design.
