Build a trip to Beijing
Badaling is the best-known section of the Ming Great Wall, built across a strategic mountain pass northwest of Beijing. Massive stone and brick ramparts follow steep ridgelines between watchtowers, creating the iconic image of the wall rising and falling across northern terrain. The broad parapets, crenellations and fortified gateways demonstrate a mature defensive system designed for observation, communication and troop movement rather than a simple boundary line. The pass guarded an important approach to the capital and formed part of a much larger network of walls, forts and beacon towers. Restoration made the architecture unusually legible, allowing the relationship between tower spacing, elevation and field of view to be understood directly. Its symbolic status in modern China has turned Badaling into both a historic military landscape and one of the principal public images through which the Great Wall is known worldwide.
