Dongyue Temple is a major Daoist complex founded in the Yuan dynasty and historically dedicated to the God of Mount Tai. Its long central axis contains gates, halls, courtyards and numerous sculptural groups representing divine officials responsible for different aspects of life, death, justice and the afterworld. The famous “departments” use vivid figures and folk narratives to make an elaborate spiritual bureaucracy visible within architectural space. Stone steles record patronage from officials, guilds and ordinary worshippers, revealing the temple’s deep connections with urban society. Daoist ritual, popular belief and moral instruction overlap throughout the complex, whose imagery can be dramatic, humorous and unsettling at the same time. The site is therefore both a religious institution and a rare museum-like archive of Beijing’s folk imagination and communal devotional practices.
