Beijing Expo Park was created for the 2019 International Horticultural Exhibition in Yanqing, where architecture, gardens and ecological restoration were arranged against the mountains northwest of the capital. The vast grounds include the China Pavilion, International Pavilion, Botanic Pavilion and a mosaic of provincial and international gardens. Roof forms, terraces, wetlands and planted slopes connect large exhibition buildings with an open landscape designed to display horticultural traditions from different climates and cultures. The park’s permanent value lies in the way it transformed a temporary world exposition into a long-term botanical and public landscape. Chinese regional gardens interpret local architecture and planting, while international areas present different approaches to garden design and environmental technology. Water systems, restored habitat and mountain views give the site a scale beyond that of a conventional flower show, making it an example of contemporary landscape planning as well as a collection of gardens.
