Parc de la Ciutadella
Build a trip to Barcelona
About
For decades the city's only green space, this park was built on the site of a former military citadel. It houses the Catalan Parliament, the Barcelona Zoo, and several museums. The park’s crown jewel is the Cascada Monumental, a grand fountain featuring contributions from a young Antoni Gaudí. The atmosphere is quintessential Barcelona: relaxed, social, and vibrant. You’ll see locals practicing yoga, rowing boats on the small lake, or picnicking under orange trees. Expert recommendation: find the giant stone mammoth sculpture for a quirky photo op. Pro tip: visit on a Sunday afternoon to witness local drum circles and swing dancing groups near the bandstand.

La Paradeta (Born)
La Paradeta offers a unique, interactive seafood dining experience that works like a fishmonger's stall. You queue at the counter, choose your raw seafood by weight from the ice display, and tell the chefs how you want it cooked (grilled, fried, or steamed). When your buzzer goes off, you collect your feast. The sensory experience is loud, casual, and incredibly fresh. Expert recommendation: the 'Navajas' (razor clams) and the 'Chipirones' (baby squid) are consistently excellent. Pro tip: arrive at least 15 minutes before they open, as the line forms quickly and can stretch down the street. It’s self-service, so don't expect fine dining frills, but the value for money is unbeatable for high-quality seafood.
Chocolate Museum (Museu de la Xocolata)
Owned by the Barcelona Pastry-Makers Guild, this museum explores the history of chocolate in Europe and its medicinal and nutritional uses. The sensory experience starts at the entrance: your ticket is an edible chocolate bar. Inside, you’ll see impressive chocolate sculptures of famous Barcelona landmarks like the Sagrada Família. Expert recommendation: check their schedule for chocolate-making workshops, which are great for both kids and adults. Pro tip: the museum is relatively small and can be visited in under an hour; it’s a perfect stop between the Picasso Museum and Parc de la Ciutadella.
Zoo Barcelona
Located within the Parc de la Ciutadella, Barcelona Zoo is famous for having been the home of 'Snowflake,' the world's only known albino gorilla. Today, it focuses on conservation and education, housing over 2,000 animals across 300 species in open-enclosure habitats. The lush, park-like setting makes it a pleasant walk among elephants, giraffes, and hippos. Expert recommendation: the Komodo dragon enclosure is particularly well-designed. Pro tip: the zoo is quite large, so consider renting one of the small electric carts available at the entrance if you are visiting with young children or elderly family members.
El Born District
El Born is a captivating blend of medieval history and modern trendiness. Once the site of medieval jousting, it is now characterized by narrow, atmospheric alleys filled with independent designer boutiques, artisan workshops, and some of the city’s best tapas bars. The area is anchored by the stunning Santa Maria del Mar church and the El Born Culture and Memorial Center. Expert recommendation: visit the Mercat del Born to see the excavated ruins of 1700s Barcelona beneath the glass floor. Pro tip: the district comes alive at night; head to Passeig del Born for a gin and tonic in one of the many hole-in-the-wall bars that locals love.
