About
An enduring symbol of the city since 1897, this giant Ferris wheel gained international fame after its appearance in the classic film 'The Third Man.' The wooden red gondolas offer a slow, majestic ascent to 65 meters, providing a vintage perspective of Vienna. The experience is one of nostalgic romance, particularly as the wheel creaks gently in the wind. Expert recommendation: The 'Panorama' museum at the entrance uses miniature theater boxes to tell the history of the Prater and the wheel. Practical pro tip: For a special occasion, you can book a private candle-lit dinner in one of the luxury cabins. Go during the 'blue hour' for the best lighting for photography.

The Prater (Wiener Prater)
The Prater is a vast public park that was once a royal hunting ground, gifted to the people by Joseph II in 1766. It is divided into the 'Wurstelprater' (amusement park) and the 'Green Prater' (forests and meadows). The sensory experience ranges from the nostalgic clatter of old wooden rides to the serene rustle of chestnut trees along the Hauptallee. Expert recommendation: Take a walk down the 4.5km-long Hauptallee for a true local experience of jogging or cycling. Practical pro tip: Entry to the park is free; you only pay for individual rides. It’s most atmospheric at sunset when the neon lights of the fairground start to glow against the darkening sky.
Schweizerhaus (Prater)
Schweizerhaus is more than a restaurant; it’s a Viennese cultural phenomenon located in the Prater amusement park. It features one of the city's largest and most famous beer gardens. The atmosphere is loud, joyful, and quintessentially summer in Vienna. They are famous for Budweiser beer and their massive pork knuckles. Expert recommendation: The 'Stelze' (roasted pork knuckle) is a must—the skin is incredibly crispy. It is usually sold by weight, so specify if you want a smaller one. Practical pro tip: Note that Schweizerhaus is only open from March 15th to October 31st. It’s almost always crowded, but the turn-over is fast. Cash is king here, so bring enough for your Stelze and several rounds of beer.
Kunst Haus Wien (Museum Hundertwasser)
Located just a few blocks from the Hundertwasserhaus, this museum was also designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser and serves as a permanent exhibition of his philosophy and artworks. The building features his signature checkerboard facade, colorful mosaics, and lush roof gardens. Inside, you’ll find a comprehensive collection of his paintings, architectural models, and environmental manifestos. Expert recommendation: The museum also hosts world-class temporary photography exhibitions, so check their schedule before visiting. Practical pro tip: The museum's ground-floor bistro, 'Tian on the Go,' offers fantastic vegetarian and vegan options in a uniquely decorated setting. Wear comfortable shoes, as the floors inside are deliberately undulating.
Ullmann's Zuckerbäckerei
Ullmann's is a modern take on the traditional Viennese pastry shop, located in the 2nd district. It combines a sleek, contemporary interior with world-class pastry craftsmanship. They are known for their exquisite cakes, handmade pralines, and a breakfast menu that is considered one of the best in the area. Expert recommendation: Their breakfast towers for two are a visual and culinary feast. Don't leave without trying one of their signature éclairs. Practical pro tip: It's a great spot to visit if you are staying near the Prater or the Messe Wien. It's much less crowded than the first-district cafes but offers the same (if not higher) level of quality. They also offer pastry-making workshops if you book in advance.
