Gyukatsu Motomura (Shinjuku)
Build a trip to Tokyo
About
Motomura focuses on a single dish: Gyukatsu, or deep-fried beef cutlet. The beef is coated in fine breadcrumbs and flash-fried for only 60 seconds, leaving the center rare. Each guest is provided with a small personal stone grill (shichirin) to sear each slice to their own liking. The set comes with barley rice, grated yam (tororo), and a variety of dipping salts and sauces. The sizzle of the beef on the grill and the tender, fatty texture of the meat make it a sensory delight. Be prepared for long lines at their small basement locations.

Isomaru Suisan (Shinjuku)
A boisterous, high-energy 24-hour seafood izakaya that feels like a seaside fish market. The tables are equipped with portable gas grills (hamayaki), allowing you to grill your own scallops, giant prawns, and their signature 'Kani Miso' (crab brain in the shell) right at your seat. It is famous for its fresh sashimi platters and cheap beer. The atmosphere is loud, smoky, and fun—a quintessential Japanese drinking experience. It’s a great spot for an affordable late-night seafood feast or a casual drinking session with friends in the heart of Shinjuku.
Mo-Mo-Paradise Shinjuku
This is the flagship of the world-famous Shabu-shabu and Sukiyaki specialty chain. Their soups are free from artificial additives, emphasizing natural flavors. The Shinjuku branch is spacious and offers a great environment for group dining. It is widely considered the best 'value-for-money' meat feast in central Tokyo. Booking is advised on weekends due to its immense popularity with locals.

Kabukicho (Godzilla Head)
As Asia's largest red-light and entertainment district, Kabukicho is a neon-lit maze of cinemas, bars, and clubs. Its modern mascot is the massive, life-sized Godzilla head peering over the Toho Cinema building. The head 'roars' and emits smoke and light at set intervals, making it a popular photo spot. While the area has a gritty reputation, it is generally safe and incredibly vibrant. Don't miss the nearby 'Ninja Trick House' or the various themed cafes that define the area's eccentric and high-energy personality.
Omoide Yokocho
Commonly known as 'Memory Lane' or the more graphic 'Piss Alley,' this narrow network of alleys near Shinjuku Station's west exit dates back to the post-war era. It is packed with over 80 tiny, open-counter stalls specializing in Yakitori (grilled chicken) and Motsuyaki (grilled offal). The atmosphere is thick with charcoal smoke and nostalgia, providing a raw, authentic glimpse into Tokyo's mid-century salaryman culture. It is an essential stop for foodies looking for a gritty, unpolished dining experience amidst the surrounding modern skyscrapers.
