Wanhua District (Old City)
Build a trip to Taipei
About
Wanhua, formerly known as Bangka, is Taipei's oldest district and the site of its first commercial harbor. The area is a living history book, containing the city's most significant temples, traditional markets, and colonial-era architecture. The atmosphere is raw, spiritual, and deeply traditional, where the elder generation still gathers to play chess in the parks. The sensory experience is defined by the heavy scent of incense from Longshan Temple and the historic textures of the red-brick alleys in Bopiliao. Expert recommendation: Explore 'Herb Alley' (Ln. 224, Xichang St.) to see where locals have bought medicinal plants for centuries. Pro tip: While some parts can feel a bit 'rough' compared to the sleek Xinyi district, it is completely safe and offers the most authentic glimpse into the soul of old Taipei. Best explored on foot in the morning or early evening.

Tainan Tan Tsu Mien
Located in the historic Huaxi Street (Snake Alley), this restaurant is a surreal blend of world-class seafood and over-the-top European palace decor in the middle of a gritty night market. Known for its 'Tan Tsu' noodles—a traditional Tainan snack—it has grown into a luxury seafood institution featuring gold-plated cutlery and crystal chandeliers. The sensory experience is a bizarre but delightful contrast of elite fine dining and old-school market surroundings. Expert recommendation: The signature Tan Tsu noodles are small and savory, topped with a single shrimp and a rich meat sauce. Pro tip: Don't let the neighborhood fool you; this is a high-end establishment with prices to match. It is one of the most unique 'only in Taipei' dining experiences you can have.
Longshan Temple
Established in 1738, Longshan Temple is a spiritual heart of Taipei, where locals come to worship a blend of Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian deities. The temple has survived earthquakes, fires, and even WWII bombings, standing today as a masterpiece of traditional Taiwanese temple architecture with its intricate dragon poles and mosaic roofs. The sensory experience is profound: the thick scent of incense, the rhythmic sound of chanting, and the vibrant red and gold decor. Expert recommendation: Watch how locals use 'Bua Buei' (crescent-shaped wooden blocks) to ask the gods for guidance. Pro tip: Visit in the early morning or evening to see the temple at its most active. The surrounding Wanhua district is one of the oldest in Taipei, famous for its traditional herbal medicine shops and the nearby 'Snake Alley' (Huaxi Street Night Market).
Bopiliao Historical Block
Bopiliao is a beautifully preserved street that offers a rare architectural window into Taipei’s past, featuring structures from the Qing Dynasty, Japanese colonial period, and early post-war era. The red-brick facades, arched walkways, and traditional carved doors tell the story of one of the city's oldest commercial districts. The atmosphere is nostalgic and cinematic, often used as a filming location for period dramas. The sensory experience is a quiet walk through history, with curated indoor exhibits explaining local folk life. Expert recommendation: Look for the street art and murals that blend modern creativity with the old-world setting. Pro tip: It is located right next to Longshan Temple, making it a perfect combined itinerary. The area is closed on Mondays, so plan your visit for the weekend to experience the small artisan pop-ups.
Ximending Pedestrian Area
Known as the 'Harajuku of Taipei,' Ximending is the epicenter of youth culture, street fashion, and pop subcultures in Taiwan. This vibrant pedestrian zone is filled with neon billboards, cosplay, street performers, and a vast array of themed cafes and boutiques. The atmosphere is electric and unapologetically modern, providing a sharp contrast to the nearby historic Longshan Temple. The sensory experience is one of visual overload and loud K-pop or J-pop soundtracks. Expert recommendation: Look for the 'Red House,' a historic octagonal theater that now houses creative design boutiques and a lively LGBT-friendly bar area. Pro tip: This is the best place to find unique Taiwanese souvenirs and trendy apparel. For a classic snack, join the stand-up crowd for Ay-Chung Flour-Rice Noodles. The area is most vibrant on Friday and Saturday nights.
