The Grand Hotel Taipei
Perched on Yuanshan mountain, The Grand Hotel is one of the world's tallest Chinese-style buildings and a prominent landmark of Taipei. Its bright red columns, golden roof tiles, and palatial architecture were designed to showcase Chinese cultural splendor to visiting dignitaries. The interior is equally opulent, featuring a grand lobby with a massive staircase and intricate dragon motifs. The atmosphere is one of imperial grandeur and historical intrigue. Expert recommendation: Book the 'Secret Tunnel' tour to explore the underground emergency escape routes built for Chiang Kai-shek. Pro tip: You don't need to be a guest to visit the lobby or the restaurants. Take the free shuttle bus from MRT Yuanshan Station. The 'Yuan-Yuan' restaurant is highly regarded for its traditional northern Chinese dim sum and pastries.
Confucius Temple Taipei
Modeled after the original temple in Qufu, the Taipei Confucius Temple is a bastion of classical Chinese architecture and Confucian philosophy. Unlike the more colorful Taoist temples, this site is characterized by simplicity, austerity, and a lack of deities, focusing instead on the sage’s teachings. The atmosphere is scholarly and serene, with beautiful courtyard gardens and halls dedicated to various Confucian scholars. The sensory experience is one of quiet dignity and architectural balance. Expert recommendation: Visit during the Confucius Memorial Ceremony on September 28th to witness ancient ritual dances and music. Pro tip: There is a 4D theater inside that shows a high-quality animated film about the life of Confucius—it's surprisingly engaging and free. The adjacent Baoan Temple offers a great contrast in temple styles.
Baoan Temple
A winner of a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award, Dalongdong Baoan Temple is renowned for its incredible craftsmanship and the preservation of traditional temple arts. Dedicated to the God of Medicine, the temple features stunning stone carvings, murals by master artists, and vibrant mosaic roofs. The atmosphere is spiritual and historically rich, reflecting the deep faith of the Dalongdong community. The sensory experience is one of visual complexity and the rhythmic sound of wooden 'oracle' blocks hitting the floor. Expert recommendation: Look closely at the seven murals in the main hall—they are considered national treasures of Taiwanese folk art. Pro tip: Visit in the afternoon during the 'Baosheng Cultural Festival' (usually March-May) for traditional opera performances and parades. It is right next to the Confucius Temple.
