Zam Zam Singapore
Operating since 1908, Zam Zam is one of Singapore's oldest and most iconic Indian-Muslim restaurants. Located directly opposite the Sultan Mosque, it is world-renowned for its 'Murtabak'—a giant stuffed pancake filled with minced meat (mutton, beef, or chicken), onions, and eggs, served with a rich side of curry. The sensory experience is a bustling, no-frills journey through history—the sound of dough hitting the griddle and the vibrant atmosphere of Kampong Glam. Experts recommend the 'Deer Murtabak' for a unique and traditional specialty. Practical pro tip: Head to the second floor for an air-conditioned seating area; the portions are huge, so one large Murtabak is easily enough for two people. It is a strictly Halal establishment and a must-visit for authentic local flavor.

Sultan Mosque
The Sultan Mosque (Masjid Sultan) is the focal point of the Kampong Glam district and the most important mosque in Singapore. Historically, it was first built in 1824 by Sultan Hussain Shah, but the current structure with its massive golden domes and minarets was completed in 1928. A unique architectural detail is the base of each dome, which is decorated with glass bottle ends donated by the poor, symbolizing that all Muslims contributed to its construction. The atmosphere is one of profound peace and religious devotion. Experts recommend viewing the mosque from 'Bussorah Street' for the most iconic symmetrical photo. Pro tip: The mosque is closed to tourists during prayer times; check the visiting hours on the signage outside. Remember to remove your shoes and dress modestly (robes are provided for free at the entrance).
Haji Lane
Haji Lane is one of Singapore’s narrowest and most vibrant streets, located in the historic Kampong Glam district. Historically a place for pilgrims waiting to travel to Mecca, it has transformed into a hipster enclave of indie boutiques and quirky bars. The sensory experience is a visual riot—walls covered in monumental street art, colorful shop facades, and the sound of chatter from open-air cafes. The aroma of shisha (now mostly replaced by gourmet coffee and fusion food) once defined this alley. Experts recommend looking for the massive 'Aztec' mural near the end of the lane for the best photo. Pro tip: The street is most alive after 4:00 PM when the bars open and the crowd gathers; visit on a weekday morning if you want clear, tourist-free photos of the murals.
Kampong Glam
Originally the seat of the Malay royalty in Singapore, Kampong Glam is the city’s historic Muslim quarter. The name is derived from the 'Gelam' tree that once grew here. Today, it is a trendy fusion of heritage and hip lifestyle, where traditional carpet shops and spice traders sit next to artisanal cafes and indie boutiques. The sensory experience is defined by the majestic golden dome of the Sultan Mosque and the eclectic street art of Haji Lane. Experts recommend trying authentic 'Nasi Padang' at one of the long-standing family-run restaurants on Kandahar Street. Pro tip: Most shops in this area don't open until 11:00 AM or noon; visit in the late afternoon to experience the area's transition into a lively evening hub with shisha-free bars and live music.
