About
An expansion of the century-old 'appetizing' shop nearby, this café brings the tradition of lox, bagels, and herring into a beautiful sit-down space. The decor is a nod to the 1914 origins with a modern, clean aesthetic. It represents the Jewish culinary heritage of the Lower East Side, serving world-class smoked fish and caviar. The atmosphere is bustling and friendly, filled with the clinking of soda fountain glasses. Expert recommendation: The 'Lower East Side' platter or the 'Challah French Toast' are local favorites. Pro tip: The wait for a table can be several hours on weekends; put your name in and explore the nearby Tenement Museum. Alternatively, visit the original shop on Houston Street to grab a bagel to go and enjoy it in a nearby park.

Tenement Museum
This unique museum is located in two historic tenement buildings that were home to an estimated 15,000 people from over 20 nations between 1863 and 1935. Unlike traditional museums, it can only be seen via guided tours that recreate the lives of specific immigrant families. The sensory experience is visceral—walking through cramped, dimly lit rooms that tell the story of the American dream. Expert recommendation: The 'Under One Roof' tour is highly recommended for a look at post-WWII migration. Pro tip: Tours sell out days in advance, so booking online early is essential. Because you are visiting actual historic apartments, there are many stairs; if you have mobility issues, look for their specifically designated accessible tours or virtual programs.
Attaboy
Located in the former space of the legendary Milk & Honey, Attaboy is a speakeasy that eschews menus entirely. Instead, bartenders interview guests about their preferences and craft bespoke cocktails on the spot. The space is narrow, industrial, and lit by low-hanging bulbs, creating an intimate, focused atmosphere. The sound of ice being hand-cracked is the soundtrack here. Expert recommendation: Trust the process—tell them your favorite base spirit and mood, and let them surprise you with a 'Penicillin' or a custom creation. Pro tip: They do not take reservations. To get a seat, knock on the unmarked door with the 'A' and give your number; they’ll text you when a spot opens. Expect waits of 1-2 hours on weekends.
Katz's Delicatessen
Katz's has been on the corner of Houston and Ludlow since 1888, which means it has outlasted every trend, every wave of gentrification, and most of the neighborhood that surrounded it. The Lower East Side around it has changed entirely; inside, almost nothing has. You take a ticket at the door. You find the counter. The carver will ask how you want it — lean, fatty, or mixed — and slice to order. Tip him and he'll be generous. The pastrami is cured and smoked in-house, served on rye with yellow mustard, and arrives in a quantity that seems structurally improbable. It's the right amount. The table where the "I'll have what she's having" scene was filmed in When Harry Met Sally is marked with a sign. People sit there on purpose. The fluorescent lighting, the formica tables, the hand-painted signs on the walls — none of it has been updated, which is exactly the point. Some places get preserved. Katz's just never stopped.
Lombardi's Pizza
Recognized by the Pizza Hall of Fame as the first pizzeria in the United States (founded in 1905), Lombardi's is a slice of American history. Located in Little Italy, it still uses a coal-fired oven to produce smoky, charred-crust pizzas. The walls are covered in red checkered patterns and photos of its long history. The vibe is nostalgic, unpretentious, and bustling. Expert recommendation: The 'Original Margherita' or the 'Clam Pie' are the signature choices. Pro tip: They do not sell slices; you must order a whole pie. Like many old-school Italian spots in the area, it is cash only, though there is an ATM on-site. It can be very touristy, so visit during off-peak hours (like 3:00 PM) to get a booth without a long wait.
