Fifth Avenue Shopping
Build a trip to New York City
About
Fifth Avenue is synonymous with luxury and is consistently ranked as one of the most expensive shopping streets in the world. The stretch between 49th and 60th Streets houses flagship stores for brands like Tiffany & Co., Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bergdorf Goodman. Historically, this was the 'Millionaire’s Row' of the Gilded Age. The sensory experience is one of opulent window displays, polished marble floors, and the constant hum of yellow taxis. Expert recommendation: Even if you aren't shopping, visit the Apple Store Fifth Avenue for its iconic glass cube architecture. Pro tip: During the holiday season (late November to December), the window displays at Saks are a major attraction; go late at night to see them illuminated without the crushing crowds of midday.

St. Patrick's Cathedral
This Neo-Gothic Catholic cathedral is a striking contrast to the modern glass storefronts of Fifth Avenue. Opened in 1878, it features twin spires that rise 330 feet and can accommodate 3,000 worshippers. The interior is filled with intricate stained glass from Chartres and a massive pipe organ with over 7,000 pipes. The atmosphere is one of profound quietude and spiritual grandeur amidst the city's noise. Expert recommendation: Look for the Pietà sculpture, which is three times larger than Michelangelo’s version in Rome. Pro tip: The cathedral is free to enter, but remain respectful as it is an active place of worship. If you want to light a candle, have some small bills ready for the suggested donation; the midday mass features beautiful acoustics if you happen to be there at noon.
Top of the Rock
Located atop the Art Deco 30 Rockefeller Plaza, this observation deck offers what many consider the best view in NYC because it includes the Empire State Building in its frame. Built by the Rockefeller family during the 1930s, the complex represents a 'city within a city' philosophy. The three levels of viewing decks feature large glass panels and unobstructed outdoor spaces. The atmosphere is sophisticated and less enclosed than other towers. Experts recommend the 'Sun & Stars' ticket to visit twice in 24 hours. Pro tip: Arrive 45 minutes before your timed entry to explore the Channel Gardens and the golden Prometheus statue at the base before heading up to the 70th-floor open-air deck.
Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
Established in 1929, MoMA is often identified as the most influential museum of modern art in the world. Its collection includes seminal works such as Van Gogh’s 'The Starry Night' and Picasso’s 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon.' Following a massive expansion, the museum now offers fluid, interdisciplinary galleries that challenge traditional art history. The sensory experience is sleek and minimalist, centered around the tranquil Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. Expert recommendation: Head straight to the 5th floor for the permanent collection of masterpieces before the crowds peak. Pro tip: Reserve timed-entry tickets online. Entry is free for NYC residents on select Friday nights, though these sessions become extremely crowded.

Radio City Music Hall
Known as the 'Showplace of the Nation,' Radio City Music Hall is a stunning Art Deco theater within Rockefeller Center. It is the home of the world-famous Rockettes and has hosted the Grammy and Tony Awards. The interior is a symphony of gold leaf, velvet, and bakelite, designed by Donald Deskey. The sensory experience is defined by the massive, arched proscenium that mimics a setting sun. Expert recommendation: Take the 'Stage Door Tour' to see the secret apartment of Roxy Rothafel and potentially meet a Rockette. Pro tip: If visiting during the holidays for the 'Christmas Spectacular,' book tickets for the first morning show to save money and avoid the heavy mid-town pedestrian congestion that occurs later in the day.
