Xianghu Lake is a broad lake and wetland landscape in Xiaoshan, south of the Qiantang River, often described as West Lake’s quieter sister but rooted in a distinct archaeological and political history. Low hills, reed beds, islands, stone bridges and long stretches of open water create a spacious environment less tightly framed by monuments than West Lake. Restored shorelines and expanded water areas have reconnected sections of the historic basin, while park landscapes blend wetlands, woodland and cultivated scenery. The area is closely associated with the Kuahuqiao culture, an early Neolithic community dating back roughly eight thousand years. Waterlogged remains, including an exceptionally ancient dugout canoe, transformed understanding of settlement and boat technology in the lower Yangtze region. Xianghu also belonged to the landscape of the ancient state of Yue and carries stories connected with its military history. These layers give the lake a significance extending far beyond recreation. It brings together prehistoric adaptation to water, regional state memory and modern ecological restoration within a landscape whose broad horizons preserve a markedly different mood from central Hangzhou.
