Nine Creeks Meandering Through Mist is a wooded valley landscape where streams descend from the tea hills southwest of West Lake toward the Qiantang River. Despite the poetic name, the watercourse gathers many small tributaries that weave across stone paths beneath camphor, maple, bamboo and tea. Shallow channels, stepping stones and the central pool at Jiuxi Yanshu create a close, constantly changing relationship with water, while humid air and filtered light give the ravine its characteristic softness after rain. The valley forms a natural passage between the Longjing tea-growing area and the river, so cultivated terraces appear among otherwise dense subtropical woodland. Its scenery differs from the open, designed vistas of West Lake: scale is intimate, views are enclosed and sound comes from moving water rather than broad urban activity. Autumn foliage introduces red and gold into the green canopy, while exposed roots and weathered stone reveal the long action of runoff on the slopes. Nine Creeks is valued as a coherent ecological and agricultural landscape in which Hangzhou’s mountain water, forest and tea culture meet.
