The Qianjiang New Town Light Show transforms Hangzhou’s modern riverfront into a synchronized field of moving color and imagery. Architectural lighting installed across dozens of towers uses entire façades as a continuous visual surface, while the Sun-shaped International Conference Center and Moon-shaped Grand Theatre anchor the composition beside the Qiantang River. Animated patterns, landscape motifs and civic themes travel across buildings of different heights, turning a business district planned in stone and glass into a large-scale nocturnal artwork. The spectacle expresses a contemporary counterpart to West Lake’s historic scenic culture. Instead of pagodas reflected in quiet water, digital images and illuminated skylines mirror across the broad Qiantang, presenting technology itself as part of Hangzhou’s identity. The show gained international visibility around the 2016 G20 summit, when the city used coordinated urban lighting to represent its transformation and global ambitions. City Balcony and the river embankment function as the principal public foreground, allowing the relationship among open water, civic architecture and dense high-rise development to be understood as one planned panorama.
