Huagang Park, formally associated with the West Lake scene Viewing Fish at Flower Harbor, is a large garden of ponds, lawns, woodland and flowering collections near the southern end of Su Causeway. Its best-known feature is the Red Carp Pond, where bright fish move beneath bridges and shaded banks, creating a vivid contrast with dark water and green foliage. Beyond it, peony beds, meandering paths and open views toward the lake make the park considerably more varied than its famous name suggests. The site developed from the private garden of a Southern Song official and was later restored and enlarged as part of the imperial and modern shaping of West Lake. Fish viewing belongs to a long Chinese garden tradition in which movement beneath water becomes an object of contemplation, famously connected with philosophical debates about observing another creature’s happiness. The garden’s flower harbor, ornamental fish and framed lake views combine several layers of sensory experience without relying on monumental architecture. Huagang is thus both a historic scenic theme and a substantial twentieth-century public landscape built upon older garden memory.
