The Bamboo Forest at Yunqi forms the defining landscape of Yunqi Zhujing, a secluded valley southwest of West Lake where tall moso bamboo encloses an old stone path. Dense culms rise in layered ranks above streams, ancient trees and moss-covered ground, filtering sunlight into a cool green atmosphere. The setting has long been valued for quietness after rain, when mist settles among the slopes and water runs beside the path. Historic pavilions, inscribed stones and traces of temple culture appear gradually within the vegetation rather than dominating it. Yunqi became a celebrated retreat in the Ming and Qing periods and was visited by the Kangxi and Qianlong emperors during their southern tours. Its name, often understood as “clouds dwelling,” suits a terrain where humid air gathers against the wooded hills. The bamboo is both botanical habitat and cultural subject: its upright form and evergreen character have represented integrity and resilience in Chinese art for centuries. Together with sweetgum, camphor and tea-growing landscapes nearby, the grove preserves a distinctly southern Hangzhou mountain ecology beyond the formal gardens of West Lake.
