Impression West Lake, now presented as Enduring Memories of Hangzhou, is a large outdoor performance staged directly on the lake near Yuehu. A submerged platform allows dancers and musicians to appear to move across the water, while lighting, projection, mist and the dark silhouettes of surrounding hills expand the stage far beyond a conventional theater. Music and visual sequences draw on Chinese poetry, folk melody, ballet and familiar West Lake legends, creating a dreamlike portrait of the city rather than a linear historical drama. The production grew from the open-air spectacle originally directed by Zhang Yimou and was substantially reworked after the 2016 G20 Hangzhou summit performance. Its artistic identity depends on the real landscape: ripples reflect color, weather changes the atmosphere and distant illuminated architecture becomes part of the scene. Classical references such as the Butterfly Lovers and the White Snake are placed beside international musical language, expressing Hangzhou as both historic cultural symbol and contemporary global city. The result is a modern form of landscape theater in which West Lake itself functions as scenery, surface and central performer.
