Tianfu Square is the symbolic civic center of Chengdu, occupying a major urban crossroads above important archaeological layers of the old city. Broad paved spaces, fountains and formal landscaping are framed by the Chengdu Museum, Sichuan Science and Technology Museum and major commercial streets. A large statue of Mao Zedong anchors the northern side, giving the square a monumental political image inherited from twentieth-century planning. The site also lies close to the historical heart of successive Chengdu city plans, making it a point where ancient urban continuity and modern civic design overlap. Its sunken transport spaces and radial roads organize movement through the contemporary metropolis, while surrounding institutions concentrate culture and public memory. Tianfu Square functions less as a leisure park than as the geographic and symbolic reference point from which central Chengdu is understood.

West Pearl Tower is Chengdu’s principal broadcasting tower and one of the tallest structures in western China. A slender concrete shaft rises to a series of circular observation and technical levels, creating a landmark visible across the eastern city. The tower’s elevated spaces reveal the flat extent of the Chengdu Plain, the dense urban center and, under clear conditions, the distant mountain edge surrounding the basin. Built as communications infrastructure, the structure also became a symbol of Chengdu’s modern growth and technological ambition. Its vertical form contrasts with the low traditional neighborhoods and broad contemporary commercial districts below. The combination of working broadcast function, observation architecture and skyline identity places West Pearl within the global tradition of television towers used as civic landmarks. Its night lighting reinforces the tower’s role as a visual marker within the eastern skyline.
